What is a bbcor bat?

A BBCOR bat is a baseball bat that meets the BBCOR standard set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) in 2011. This standard was put in place to replace the previous BESR (Ball Exit Speed Ratio) standard, which was believed to have allowed for bats to perform too well, leading to the potential for injury for players.

BBCOR stands for "Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution," which measures the trampoline effect of a bat when it hits a ball. BBCOR bats have a maximum length of 36 inches and a maximum diameter of 2.62 inches. The drop, or the difference between the length and weight of the bat, must be -3 or less. This means that a 33-inch bat must weigh at least 30 ounces.

BBCOR bats are designed to perform similarly to wooden bats while still allowing for better durability and lighter weight. These bats typically have a narrower barrel compared to previous standards, resulting in less "pop" off the bat. While some players may prefer the performance of non-BBCOR bats, BBCOR bats are mandatory for all high school and college players in the United States.
